Google expanding across Highway 101 in Mountain View for the first time

Google is one of the most powerful search engine in the world. Google is expanding across Highway 101 in Mountain View for the first time, leasing buildings originally occupied by Hewlett-Packard and adding two more.The Internet search giant will occupy up to 630,000 square feet at the new site when work is done. There is 447,000 square feet of space existing at the former HP site. Developer Keenan Lovewell Ventures is seeking city approval to add two more buildings to the site, which would create an additional 182,000 square feet

The city of Mountain View takes up about 12 miles on the peninsula. Google can claim about 25 percent of that space through purchases and leases, and with $35 billion in cash they have plenty in the bank to keep on buying.

Maybe a decade from now the city, with a current population of about 75,000, will rename itself Google View.

That could actually work, when you consider that it’s already part of the lingo when mapping a location. If you go to Google maps just to find Google’s buildings, you will get nine new hits in the first quarter of this year, with an assessed value of more than $85 million.

And that has got to be low considering that the search giant has already signed a $30 million land lease on 18.6 acres where it plans to construct multiple offices.

Now Google has jumped Highway 101, like a fire sweeping through a town. Only this blazing business is adding revenue into city coffers and making Mountain View one of the hottest places to work. It is drawing startups to the city’s core and new hires to Google’s campus, as the company continues its hiring binge. Google has said it will add 6,000 more people to its already swelling payroll of close to 25,000.

All of this energy — new hires, new land — has real estate brokers who work deals in Mountain View all smiles.

CB Richard Ellis, which handles the land deals for Google, isn’t wasting any time waiting for the next available space to pop up.

Google is hungry and its brokers are knocking on doors. That’s just fine for the landowners, brokers in the 650 area code and the city of Mountain View that holds the ground leases to Google’s headquarters and more.

The 18-acre expansion alone will put about $1 million of interest into Mountain View’s coffers helping to eliminate its budget deficit. If only all of the cities in the 408 area code had the same good fortune.

SanDisk planned to buy Pliant technology for $375 million

SanDisk is one of the best manfacturing company in the world , there are some best products from SanDisk like memory cards, pendrives,etc.,now it is going to planned to launch a new pliant technology, but the SanDisk company is not developing this technology, the company is trying to buy that Pliant Technology for $375 million. shares jumped on Monday after it said it will buy Pliant Technology Inc. for $327 million.

The deal combines two Milpitas-based companies as flash memory maker SanDisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) is looks to provide low-power, faster storage for its customers.

SanDisk said that the purchase of the 80-employee Pliant will cut its non-GAAP earnings per share by 2 to 3 percent in fiscal 2011, but will add to profits in fiscal 2012.

SanDisk shares rose as much as 7 percent before closing the day up about 3 percent at $47.95.

All the humans in the world had stored more than 295 billion gigabytes or 295 exabytes of data since 1986, according to the research made by the scientists of University of Southern California(USC).

They also concluded that 2002 will be considered the beginning of the digital age as this year replaced all the analog capacity overtaken by digital storage media.

The study, published this week in the Science Express journal, stated that “if a single star is a bit of information, there’s a galaxy of information for every person in the world. But it’s still less than 1% of the information stored in all the DNA molecules of a human being.”

The study tracked some 60 analog and digital technologies from 1986 to 2007, calculating the amount of data stored, communicated and computed. In 2007, 2.9 X 10^20 optimally compressed bytes were stored, almost X 10^21 bytes were communicated and 6.4 x 10^18 instructions per second were run on general purpose computers.

Now the share of paper-based storage is 0.007% where as it is 33% in 1986.In 2007, hard disk drives held 52% of all stored data, optical storage devices held 28%, and digital tape about 11%.

Hilbert explained the study’s findings in a short video.

The study found that data storage grew 23% annually between 1986 and 2007.

General computing capacity from 1986 through 2007, grew at an annual rate of 58%, the report said.

The world’s capacity for bidirectional telecommunication through devices like cell phones, grew at 28% per year. Overall, the world shared 65 exabytes of information through telecommunication devices.

The telecommunications business has been dominated by digital technologies since 1990, with 99.9% of it in digital format in 2007.

Also in 2007, all the general-purpose computers in the world computed 6.4 x 10^18 instructions per second, the same general order of magnitude as the number of nerve impulses executed by a single human brain. “Doing these instructions by hand would take 2,200 times the period since the Big Bang,” the study stated.

Anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks has been nominated for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian politician behind the proposal said on Wednesday, a day after the deadline for nominations expired.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee accepts nominations from public until February 1st, but they have the choice to make their own nominations until the end of the month.

Norwegian parliamentarian Snorre Valen said WikiLeaks was “one of the most important contributors to freedom of speech and transparency” in the 21st century.

“By disclosing information about corruption, human rights abuses and war crimes, WikiLeaks is a natural contender for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Valen said.

In mid-January, former Swiss banker Rudolf Elmer gave WikiLeaks information about the bank accounts of more than 2,000 prominent individuals, many of whom may have committed tax evasion.

The nomination period for the 2011 prize ended Tuesday. The committee received 237 names for the prize in 2010.
