Facebook started testing a new feature “Happening Now” with a small number of users.”Happening Now” is a sidebar widget which replaces Advertisements and other recommendations.”Happening Now” shows you real-time updates, giving users the chance to see how their connections are interacting with one another without having to navigate away from their main feed.

We can also list specific events, namely Facbeook places checkins, which help us to get an idea of friends locations or interactions outside of Facebook.
Facebook people officially confirmed this to TNW people:
We are currently testing a feature within News Feed that gives people the ability to see what their friends are commenting on and “liking”, as these actions are being taken on Facebook.
This test includes a small percentage of Facebook users, just a fraction of a percent. In the coming weeks, as we learn more from this test, we’ll keep making improvements and may expand it to more people.
