A single person did not create the Internet that we know and use today. Below is a listing of several different people who’ve helped contribute and develop the Internet. The initial idea is credited as being Leonard Kleinrock’s after he published his first paper entitled “Information Flow in Large Communication Nets” on May 31, 1961.

In 1962 J.C.R. Licklider becomes the first Director of IPTO and gave his vision of a galactic network. In addition to the ideas from Licklider and Kleinrock, Robert Taylor helped create the idea of the network, which later became ARPANET.

Initial creation

The Internet as we know it today first started being developed in the late 1960′s.

In the summer of 1968, the Network Working Group (NWG) held its first meeting chaired by Elmer Shapiro with the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) with attendees: Steve Carr, Steve Crocker, Jeff Rulifson, and Ron Stoughton. In the meeting the group discussed solving issues related to getting hosts to communicate with each other.

In December 1968, Elmer Shapiro with SRI released a report “A Study of Computer Network Design Parameters.” Based on this work and earlier work done by Paul Baran, Thomas Marill and others; Lawrence Roberts and Barry Wessler helped to create the final version of the Interface Message Processor (IMP) specifications. Bolt Beranek and Newman, Inc. (BBN) was later awarded the contract to design and build the IMP sub network.

Introduction of the Internet

UCLA puts out a press release introducing the public to the Internet on July 3, 1969.

First network equipment

August 29, 1969 the first network switch and the first piece of network equipment called “IMP”, which is short for (Interface Message Processor) is sent to UCLA. On September 2, 1969 the first data moves from UCLA host to the switch. In the picture to the right, is a picture of Leonard Kleinrock next to the IMP.

The first distributed message and network crash

On Friday October 29, 1969 at 10:30 p.m., the first Internet message was sent from computer science Professor Leonard KleinRock’s laboratory at UCLA, after the second piece of network equipment was installed at SLI. This connection not only enabled the first transmission to be made, but is also considered to be the first Internet backbone.

The first message to be distributed was “LO”, which was an attempt at “LOGIN” by Charley S. Kline to log into the SLI computer from UCLA. However, the message was unable to be completed because the SLI system crashed. Shortly after the crash, the issue was resolved and he was able to log into the computer.

E-mail is developed

Ray Tomlinson introduces network e-mail in 1972. The first messaging system to send messages across a network to other users.

TCP is developed

Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn design TCP during 1973 and later publish it with the help of Yogen Dalal and Carl Sunshine in December of 1974 in RFC 675.

First commercial network

A commercial version of ARPANET known as Telenet is introduced in 1974 and considered by many to be the first Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Ethernet is conceived

Bob Metcalfe develops Ethernet idea in 1973.

TCP/IP is created

In 1978 TCP splits into TCP/IP driven by Danny Cohen, David Reed, and John Shoch to support real-time traffic. This allows the creation of UDP. TCP/IP is later standardized into ARPANET in 1983 and is still the primary protocol used for the Internet.

DNS is introduced

Paul Mockapetris and Jon Postel introduce DNS in 1984.

HTML

In 1990 Tim Berners-Lee develops HTML, which made a huge contribution to how we navigate and view the Internet today.

WWW

Tim Berners-Lee introduces WWW to the public on August 6, 1991.

Facebook offers Rs 1.34 cr package to an engineering student

Facebook is one of the worlds largest social networking site, recently in Allahabad , Facebook has hired an engineering student here for a fat annual pay package of Rs 1.34 crore, one of the biggest offers made to alumnus of any technical institution of the country.

According to P Chakravarti, Director of the Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology(MNNIT), a B.Tech student from the institute, who has requested that his name be withheld for “security reasons”, received a letter on March 27 from Facebook confirming his appointment and the annual pay package on offer was stated to be $262,500 (around Rs 1.34 crore).

Interestingly, the MNNIT Director said the recruitment process began with a mail from Facebook “in October last year which was followed by nine rounds of telephonic interviews” before he was finally selected for the plush job which would require the student, who hails from Kanpur, to move to Menlo Park in California after finishing his software engineering course at the institute.

Sourav Ganguly, who is currently in Australia, is likely to return to India for the IPL auctions which is scheduled in Bengaluru on the 4th of February. If our sources are to be believed, Ganguly is likely to forego his commentary assignment for the tri-series between India, Australia and Sri Lanka in order to practice for the upcoming Vijay Hazare trophy starting 20th February. Ganguly, who had a successful season with Bengal (he averaged 53 in 6 matches, scored 2 half centuries and 1 century and also picked 3 wickets) in the recently concluded Ranji Trophy injured himself while batting in his last match. If his injury doesn’t heal completely, he might give the Vijay Hazare trophy a miss. Time will tell.

Ganguly’s commitment and passion for the game and desire to do well is visible as the Indian Legend who turns 40 in July is keen on playing as much domestic cricket as possible to get fit for the upcoming season of IPL. Ganguly’s presence in the IPL adds spice to the already lucrative and exciting competition with all eyes on the match between PWI and KKR at Eden Gardens on 5th May.

Yuvraj Singh who was the captain of Pune Warriors in 2011 has been ruled out of the 5th season of IPL. This is a big blow to the Pune Warriors who lacked fire-power in their batting in the last season. But with Ganguly at the helm, we may just see a turnaround in the mental approach of the team that has a very strong bowling line-up and pretty capable batting line-up.

We all know that Nokia is a leading mobile company in the World, Nokia seems to be in mood to say goodbye to its Symbian branding. In a blog post the company has announced that the next version of Nokia’s Symbian OS will be called Nokia Belle. The blog post doesn’t elaborate on the reason behind the change.

As per the Nokia blog, starting February 2012, Nokia also plans to roll out Belle operating system, previously known as Symbian Belle, to some of its existing smartphones like Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia E6, Nokia X7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia C7 and Nokia Oro. These phones are currently running on older Symbain operating systems.

The Belle operating system was unveiled in August this year and powers Nokia 701, Nokia 700 and Nokia 603 smartphones.

The key features of Nokia Belle include the new informative lock screen that informs users about missed calls and messages in inbox. The new OS also packs improved home screen widgets and offers more customisation options and new apps. The email widget on Belle gives users more information, making reading emails much easier at a glance.

With Belle, users will also get an option to customise widgets like the clock, email, music player, favourite contacts and the calendar in five different sizes.

Earlier this year, Nokia also announced that is retiring its Ovi mobile services brand.
