BOSTON: A newly discovered vulnerability in the software that runs Apple Inc’s iPad and iPhone could allow hackers to enslave the popular mobile devices, three security firms said.

The flaw affects Apple’s iOS, which also runs the iPod touch, and could allow hackers to take complete control of a vulnerable device, according to Symantec Corp as well as privately held Lookout and Vupen.

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Harrison said the company was aware of the report and is investigating.

The vulnerability in Apple’s iOS is the latest in a series of security bugs identified in mobile devices over the past week.
Security experts at a hacking conference last week pointed out several vulnerabilities in Google Inc’s operating system for mobile phones and tablet PCs.

Mobile devices have become increasingly vulnerable to attack because the software that runs them has gotten far more complex over the past few year, giving the devices many of the same capabilities as personal computers.

“We shouldn’t be surprised to see security bugs happen in very complex software,” said Kevin Mahaffey, chief technology officer for mobile security firm Lookout.

Attackers would need to trick a user into visiting a website planted with a tainted PDF document before infecting an iPad tablet or iPhone smartphone.

Mahaffey said that he is not aware of any incidents in which criminals have exploited the bug to gain control of an Apple device, but said the electronics maker has yet to offer a remedy to protect against such attacks.

“Everybody — both good and bad — knows how it works,” he said.

Hi friends we all know that BlackBerry Services, but  Saudi Arabia’s telecommunication regulator, that it has ordered a suspension of BlackBerry services starting on Friday as the manufacturer of the devices has failed to meet its demands.

The Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) said that “the way BlackBerry services are provided currently does not meet the regulatory criteria of the commission and the licencing conditions,” in a statement carried by state news agency SPA.

It said that it has asked the kingdom’s three providers to suspend BlackBerry services starting on Friday after it had given them a grace period to get the manufacturer of the devices, Research In Motion (RIM), to “meet the regulatory demands.”

It said that it had warned those companies over a year ago about the need to address the issue.

The services will be banned until its demands are met, the commission added, but without elaborating on its conditions.

The announcement confirmed earlier reports that the conservative kingdom was going to follow the United Arab Emirates in suspending key BlackBerry communication services which currently cannot not be monitored by security services.

The UAE on Sunday said it will cut the key BlackBerry services of messenger, email and web browsing on October 11 over security concerns and until they are brought in line with the country’s regulations.

Both countries censor the Internet and block websites that have nudity and pornography as well as unwanted political sites.

BlackBerry has more than 700,000 subscribers in Saudi Arabia and 500,000 in the UAE, a country that has established itself as a major business hub mainly in the bustling emirate of Dubai.

The decision also caused tension between the United States and its staunch Gulf ally, the UAE, over criticism from the US State Department.

Yousef al-Otaiba, the UAE ambassador to Washington, issued a sharp e-mail response to the news media.

He said the “UAE is asking for exactly the same regulatory compliance — and with the same principles of judicial and regulatory oversight — that BlackBerry grants the US and other governments and nothing more.”

But RIM denied Tuesday giving government access to its data after it had vowed earlier in the day not to comprise the security of its clients.

Tensions between RIM and states unhappy about not having access to the encrypted data of the BlackBerry have been building up.

In July 2009, RIM charged that an update issued by UAE’s largest telecoms provider, Etisalat, was actually spyware, and that it enabled unauthorised access to information stored on users’ smartphones.

In India, the handset sparked a similar controversy after the Indian government warned it would close down RIM’s operations in the world’s fastest growing mobile market after China if it could not monitor emails and text messages because of security concerns.

RIM gave an assurance that it would soon address concerns on the “issue of monitoring the BlackBerry,” an Indian official said last week.

Microsoft Office for the Mac 2011 will hit store shelves in late October, Microsoft said, and the new release of the popular desktop productivity application suite will cost considerably less than the current version. Microsoft plans to release Office 2011 for the Mac in 13 languages in 100 countries.

The new software will be generally available in two editions: Office for Mac Home & Student Edition 2011, priced at $119 for a single installation and $149 for a three-installation family pack; and Office for Mac Home & Business Edition 2011, priced at $199 for a single installation and $279 for a two-installation multipack.

An Academic Edition, available only to higher-education students, faculty and staff will be priced at $99.

All editions include Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Messenger for Mac while the Home & Business and Academic editions also will include Outlook for Mac.

Office for Mac 2008, the current release of the application suite, is priced at $149 for the Home Edition and $399 for the Business Edition.

Microsoft said qualifying customers who purchase the current release between August 1 and November 30 could upgrade to Office 2011 through the Microsoft Office for Mac Technology Guarantee program.

Last week Microsoft, in a video posted on the Microsoft Office for Mac team blog, showed off improvements to Outlook for Mac. The new release adds the ribbon interface to the applications and an online gallery of design templates for users

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has staged a comeback in the browser war, reversing a trend of declining market share by posting two consecutive months of usage share gains against chief rivals Firefox and Chrome.

For several months, Microsoft had been losing ground in the browser category. According to Web metrics firm Net Applications, Internet Explorer’s usage share numbers had been falling steadily for some time now; in September, IE had 65.71 percent of usage share last September, according to Net Applications, and had fallen all the way to 59.75 percent in May.

But in both June and July, Microsoft’s browser posted modest gains to bounce back to a current usage share of 60.74. “Internet Explorer extended its usage share gains by another 0.42 percent in July, gaining about 1 percent global share since May,” Net Applications’ report stated. “This is the second month in a row of global gains for Internet Explorer and the third straight month of gains for Internet Explorer 8 in the United States.”

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s gains were Google and Mozilla’s losses: both Chrome and Firefox lost ground, according to Net Applications. The declines were small, but coupled with IE’s growth in usage share, the data showed Internet Explorer 8 may be reversing the trend in the browser war for Microsoft.

Microsoft celebrated Net Applications’ research. Ryan Gavin, Senior Director, Internet Explorer business and Marketing, Microsoft, posted the data on Microsoft’s Windows Blog and wrote that IE 8 was the fastest growing browser on the market. While the continued IE8 momentum is encouraging, developers and browser enthusiasts are equally as excited by the future of Internet Explorer,” Gavin wrote. “There is great buzz around the Internet Explorer 9 Platform Previews – with 2 million downloads of the Preview and over 16 million page views to the IE Test Drive site. We’re looking forward to more great things for Internet Explorer.”

IBM will acquire Storwize, a developer of real-time data compression technology, under a deal IBM disclosed. IBM did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition, which it expects to close by the end of the third quarter. Storwize is a privately held company based in Massachusetts.

Most data compression technology available today is used to compress secondary or backup data. But as the volume of data generated by businesses skyrockets there is a growing need to compress primary data as quickly as it’s generated. Demand for enterprise storage capacity is growing at a compound annual growth rate of more than 43 percent, according to market researcher IDC.

Storwize’s Random Access Compression Engine (RACE) technology compresses primary data; such as files, databases and virtualization images, in real time even as the data is in active use without affecting performance, according to IBM. RACE allows businesses to reduce their physical storage requirements by up to 80 percent, IBM said.

Storwize’s technology works with network attached storage systems from IBM and other vendors such as EMC, NetApp and Hewlett-Packard, as well as IBM’s Scaled-Out Network Attached Storage (SONAS) systems.

Storwize has more than 100 customers including Shopzilla and Sumitomo Mitsui Construction. The company’s technology is used by businesses in such industries as energy, manufacturing, finance, insurance, telecommunications and cloud services

BANGALORE: The government has selected Wipro Infotech to develop software for digitising its crime and criminal tracking network system under the national e-governance plan, the IT bellwether said.

As the Home Ministry’s software development agency, the company will link 14,000 police stations and 6,000 police offices across the country for tracking crime records on real-time basis in digital format.

“The system aims to create a nationwide networked infrastructure for IT-enabled criminal tracking system. Spanning across 35 states and union territories, it will link about 14,000 police stations and 6,000 higher police offices across the country,” Wipro vice-president Anand Sankaran said in a statement.

The company, however, did not specify the project cost, maintaining non-disclosure agreement with the ministry.

Last year, Wipro had developed a ‘Police Information System’ to cover important activities related to day-to-day functioning of police departments, including back-end administrative process of general administration, finance, stores etc.

The ambitious criminal tracking network project includes vertical connectivity of police units at various levels within the state and between states and union territories as well as horizontal connectivity, linking police functions at state and central levels to external entities.

As one of the largest e-governance projects in the country, the network system will also present a citizen-interface to provide basic services to citizens.

“As part of the scope, we will develop the core application software for states and another core application for the central government to digitize crime and criminal records,” Sankaran pointed out.

The solution will be developed on multiple platforms to address functionality required at central and state levels.

“When implemented, the application will link the state crime records bureau with the national crime record bureau, thereby creating a database that can be accessed in real-time from any police station across the country,” Sankaran noted.

The company will leverage its domain expertise and best practices to build the core application software for effective and efficient policing through adoption of e-governance principals.

“Given the current national security scenario, our solution is expected to enhance police efficiency in the detection and prevention of crimes,” Sankaran added.

Government vertical head Ranbir Singh said the network system project was one more step towards enabling the government accelerate efforts in detecting and preventing crimes in the country.

“Wipro is already working with several state governments for e-enabling security and surveillance,” Singh said.
