If you open wordpress.org it says,

WordPress is the worlds most popular and successful blogging software in the World.Millions of blogs hosted using WordPress.Thousands of developers working on this software to make it more accurate.

So,  for protecting the WordPress, WordCamp, and related trademarks Matt Mullenweg started The WordPress Foundation a charitable organization.A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, the WordPress Foundation will also pursue a charter to educate the public about WordPress and related open source software.
